Mineral Policy Institute

The Mineral Policy Institute (MPI) is an Australian NGO that monitors the activities of the Australian mining industry and works with communities affected by mining in a bid to prevent destructive mining activities and ensure that the mining industry complies with the principles of human rights, ecologically sustainable development and social justice. While highly skeptical of voluntary approaches to addressing issues of corporate accountability, MPI has a particular interest in testing the effectiveness of the OECD Guidelines as they apply to the mining industry, in particular the Australian mining industry, and to analyzing the successes and failures of this particular mechanism.

MPI has previously provided information and advice to various communities on the opportunities available to raise issues of concern using the OECD guidelines on multinational enterprises.  MPI has offered support in assessing and showing particular instances of violations of the guidelines.
