Oxfam Australia

Oxfam Australia is an Australian, independent, not-for-profit, secular, community-based aid and development organisation. Across 27 countries, the organisation works in partnership with local communities to overcome poverty and injustice. As part of Oxfam Australia's commitment, the organisation works with local communities affected by Australian extractive industry companies. Through the Mining Ombudsman campaign, Oxfam Australia works to:
•    Assist women and men from local and Indigenous communities whose human rights are threatened by the operations of Australia-based mining companies
•    Assist women, men and Indigenous communities that are, or might be, affected by a mining operation to understand their rights under international law
•    Help ensure that the Australian mining industry operates in such a way that the rights of local and Indigenous communities affected by mining are better protected
•    Demonstrate the need for an official independent industry complaints mechanism within Australia
•    Demonstrate the need for enforceable, transparent and binding extraterritorial controls that require Australian mining companies – wherever they operate – to adhere to universal human rights standards

Oxfam Australia’s Labour Rights Advocacy also has an interest in following OECD contact point developments as part of our work supporting the rights of workers, including their right to organise and collectively bargain, who are producing branded sportswear in Asia.  Oxfam Australia’s work in this regard complements that of OECD Watch in promoting corporate accountability.
