Allegations
On November 20, Friends of the Earth United States (FOE U.S.) and The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) filed a specific instance against BlackRock at the U.S. NCP. The complaint concerns activities of BlackRock related to its financing of agribusiness companies responsible for environmental and human rights abuses around the world.
The Complainants allege that BlackRock is directly contributing to environmental and human rights harms through its investments in agribusiness companies.
The Complainants are seeking mediation and resolution from the NCP to prompt BlackRock to develop meaningful practices and policies to address the risks and impacts associated with its investments in agribusiness companies responsible for negative environmental impacts, human rights abuses, and governance failures across actively-managed and index funds. This includes addressing deforestation, violence and threats against human rights defenders, and respect for the right to Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).
