Allegations

On 22 December 2020, Nitta Gelatin India Limited Action Council and Jananeethi filed a specific instance against Nitta Gelatin Inc. at the Japanese NCP. The complaint concerns activities of Nitta Gelatin Inc, through its subsidiary Nitta Gelatin India Limited (NGIL), in Kathikudam, Kerala, India in relation to the environmental and human rights impacts of NGIL’s gelatin production operations. The complainants allege that NGIL’s operations have resulted in deterioration of public health and severe contamination of the Chalakudy River, which is the primary source of drinking and agricultural water for people residing near the river. The complainants are seeking mediation from the Japanese NCP that results in an acknowledgement of the impact of NGIL’s operations on the environment and local community; ensures that Nitta Gelatin Inc and NGIL provide compensation to people affected as a result of NGIL’s operations; and an assurance from Nitta Gelatin Inc that its Indian arm NGIL will comply with the directions set out by the National Green Tribunal in India as per its 2017 order.
