Global Witness

Global Witness works on the links between the exploitation of natural resources, conflict and corruption. In this context, the organisation documents and monitors the activities of companies operating in the natural resource sector, as well as governments and other actors.  The OECD Guidelines are one of several mechanisms Global Witness uses to try to hold multinational companies to account for activities which violate human rights or contribute to other types of abuses. Global Witness also views the Guidelines as a way of encouraging the governments of OECD countries to fulfill their responsibility to hold these companies to account. Global Witness was a member of the Joint Working Group which submitted recommendations to the British government on new procedures to strengthen the implementation of the Guidelines in the UK. The organisation continues to monitor and comment on the implementation of these procedures. In 2007, under these new procedures, Global Witness filed a complaint against a British company for violations of the OECD Guidelines in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
