Solo transición

The planet is racing towards a climate crisis. To avoid it, we’re keenly focused on ensuring that government policies and corporate conduct support a transition toa sustainable, low-carbon economy in a way that is fair, inclusive and grounded in human rights.

Our work on just transition

OECD Watch is actively working to ensure that the transition to sustainable economic models is truly just. We advocate for a rights-based and inclusive approach that puts affected workers and communities at the centre, addresses existing and historical harms, and ensures that the transition does not reproduce or create new injustices.

What the OECD Guidelines say

The OECD Guidelines expect companies to take action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts while respecting human rights and addressing harms linked to their transition. Companies should:

  • Identify and address actual and potential impacts on workers, communities, and other stakeholders as they transition away from environmentally harmful activities
  • Responsibly disengage from activities or business relationships where appropriate, taking steps to prevent or mitigate adverse impacts on affected workers and communities
  • Avoid creating new human rights and environmental harms through renewable energy and other activities linked to the transition
  • Meaningfully engage with affected workers, communities and other stakeholders throughout the transition
  • Support workers adapting to changing environmental and technological conditions, including through training and upskilling.

The Guidelines also call on companies to avoid activities that undermine climate adaptation and the resilience of communities, workers and ecosystems.

The responsible business conduct standards set out in the Guidelines have been further explained within the context of the just transition in the OECD’s report, Responsible Business Conduct for a Just Transition: Protecting workers, communities and consumers in the low-carbon transition.
