OECD Watch & ACA at the UN BHR Africa Forum October 2024

Strengthening access to justice

We help communities harmed by business activities achieve remedy and justice.

What we do

OECD Watch strengthens access to justice through three key areas of work:

  • Supporting communities and civil society organisations to use the OECD Guidelines and National Contact Point (NCP) system effectively
  • Improving National Contact Points
  • Strengthening the wider remedy landscape for corporate harms

Supporting communities to seek remedy

We provide strategic advice to communities and civil society organisations seeking justice for corporate harms through the NCP complaints system.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience, we help communities navigate the NCP system and develop effective complaint strategies. We support campaigns seeking both concrete remedy for business-related impacts and broader systemic change.

Improving National Contact Points

We work to make the NCP system more effective and accessible.

We engage strategically with individual NCPs and national civil society organisations to strengthen:

  • NCP complaint handling policies and procedures
  • NCP organisation and independence
  • NCP promotion of the OECD Guidelines and engagement with civil society

By improving individual NCPs and advancing coherence across the NCP network, we support a stronger global system for access to justice.

Strengthening the wider remedy landscape

NCPs are one part of a wider corporate accountability remedy landscape. We work with civil society that are experts on other mechanisms – such as those of public and private financial institutions – to connect communities, share best practice, and collaborate in campaigns. We also endorse peer learning amongst mechanisms themselves. By fostering learning and exchange, we strengthen support for community campaigns and encourage improvement across the global remedy ecosystem.
